Celleo and CCRM Nordic present data on closed CAR-T vial filling at Advanced Therapies Europe
Celleo CEO David Kneen and Chao Sheng, Director of Process & Analytical Development at CCRM Nordic, presented the results of an independent evaluation of the Larkem® V40 in a CAR-T manufacturing workflow at Advanced Therapies Europe in Barcelona on 8 September 2026. CCRM Nordic, a public-private partnership organisation addressing bottlenecks in the translation, commercialisation, and production of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products in Sweden, conducted an independent evaluation of Celleo’s Larkem® V40 for QC sample provision at its Gothenburg facility. CAR-T cells were manufactured starting with 2 healthy donors, via parallel 5-day processes using CliniMACS Prodigy® and G-Rex® platforms. Formulated CAR-T cells were aseptically filled into cryovials using Larkem® V40 and cryopreserved. Post-thaw cell count, viability, potency, phenotype and fill accuracy were compared against a baseline manual process.
The study demonstrated that automated, closed vial filling using Celleo’s Larkem® V40 delivers:
- Enhanced fill accuracy: increased volume filling accuracy compared with manual vial filling
- Biological integrity maintained: equivalent viability, cell concentration, phenotype and potency compared with manual operations
- High-throughput, closed operation: rapid, automated filling of up to 40 cryovials in Grade C/D environments
“It was a pleasure to present CCRM Nordic’s data alongside David in Barcelona.” remarked Chao Sheng, Director of Process & Analytical Development at CCRM Nordic. “Improving CAR-T capacity utilisation is a fundamental challenge for the advanced therapies community, and our study demonstrates that Larkem can reliably provide representative QC samples, while delivering the operational benefits of closed, automated processing.“
“5-10% of global CAR-T production capacity is spent on ‘packaging’ the product, rather than making it.” noted David Kneen, CEO at Celleo. “Larkem allows that capacity to be reallocated, such that the existing industry footprint could deliver life-changing therapeutics for thousands of additional patients annually.” With ~80% of eligible patients unable to be treated with CAR-T today due to capacity constraints, such a step change is incredibly meaningful to patients, to physicians, and to therapeutic providers.
